3d Reconstruction

This 3D model of Khirbet et-Tannur was built using Trimble Sketchup alongside the journals of Nelson Glueck and the two recent ASOR volumes released about the site. To reconstruct the site, these resources were used as well as construction and stylistic information from similar temples in the area, such as Khirbet ed-Dharih and the great temple at Petra. The building process was split into three sections: the altar, the inner temenos, and the surrounding rooms and forecourt.

The altar, built out of ashlar blocks over the course of three different periods of construction, depicts the cult Gods Zeus Hadad, Nike holding the Zodiac, as well as a Goddess within the altar niche. Other important deities are represented on the surrounding levels. The top of the altar has the sacrificial high place depicted here with a priest and an ibex preparing for a sacrifice to the cult Gods.

The inner temonos is the building surrounding the altar and creates a boundary of sacred and profane. The faćade of the temenos contains a large pediment, a frieze depicting the gods Nike, Helios, Kronos and other unidentified deities in varying forms, and two niches built during the latest building phase.

The forecourt is constructed of paving stones surrounding the temenos containing two other smaller altars. Surrounding the forecourt is a series of rooms, several of which contain triclinia for feasting.

The temple itself sits atop a tall and steep mountain in the Wadi Hasa area in Jordan. It appears to have been a pilgrimage site with no evidence of occupation while the temple was in use, however there is some occupation from squatters after the temples destruction. The remains of the temple sat out in the open and at the mercy of the elements until Nelson Glueck excavated the site in the 1930’s.
